How To Crochet Beach Sandals
Jump into summer with both feet. Here is a project that is fast, simple and fun to wear as you learn how to crochet beach sandals. What are beach sandals? They have numerous names, barefoot sandals, ankloes and in Hawaii as snow boots! If you’ve ever seen a belly dancer’s “outfit”, they will be showing off their beach sandals. Over the years many names have been given to this simple but fun summer footwear.
I have to apologize for the foot model. My family was not blessed with “pretty feet”. We often wear these all summer long drawing the attention away from our stumpy toes! Crochet Beach Sandals can be done in a less than an hour for the beginner. The advance crocheter will pop a set of Crochet Beach Sandals out in a matter of a few minutes. That’s the fun of it all. Accent your summer wardrobe with all colors of Crochet Beach Sandals. At How To Crochet A Beanie you can learn how to make this crochet footwear.
You will use your basic crochet stitches along with a triple crochet (trch) and a new one called bead chain (bch). The bead chain is simply slipping your bead close to the hook and chaining your next chain with the bead in it. It may seem a little awkward at first, but just a few times working it you will find it quite easy.
You can use any kind of crochet threads for your crochet beach sandals. The thread I used for these sandals was a 100% nylon crochet thread No.2. I just enjoy the shiny crochet nylon threads for these crochet sandals. You might mix it up and combine a couple of colors. Your beads will be a little tight on your thread, but it’s doable. Another great tool I’ve found while working with beads and crochet thread is a ”big eye” beading needle. These are great to have on hand while stringing beads onto your crochet thread. They are approximately 3 inches long and the eye is the length of the needle. You have to split it open…gently… to insert your thread. I strongly recommend you use one of these instead of the larger, thicker tapestry or sewing needles. They are flexible and extremely thin. Think about investing in one if you intend to bead your crochet thread.
Crochet Supplies needed for this project are:
Crochet steel hook size I
Crochet thread color of your choice
44 beads size 8mm or size 6/0 Chech. You’ll use 22 beads on each sandal.
Big Eye beading needle
Crochet Stitches used: Chains (ch) Single Crochet (sc) Double Crochet (dc) Half Double Crochet (hdc) Triple Crochet (trcr) and a bead crochet term: bead chain (bch).
As you are learning how to crochet beach sandals, this crochet pattern is for a size 8-9 foot. If you have a smaller foot or larger foot you will need to increase or decrease a few of the chains in step 2. The sandal is crocheted in one long piece and then brought together with a slip stitch.
Let’s begin.
String 22 beads on your crochet thread and push back to about 2 feet. You will pull up the beads as you need them.
Step 1: ch1, pull up a bead next to the ch1 and yarn over behind the bead and pull through. This creates your bead chain.
Step 2 : *ch3, pull up a bead next to the ch3 and yarn over behind the bead and pull through. Repeat from * 18 more times for a total of 19 beads chained. You should have 1bch after each ch3 set.
Step 3: ch12, pull up a bead next to the ch12 and yarn over behind the bead and pull through.
Step 4: ch15, pull up a bead next to the ch15 and yarn over behing the bead and pull through.
Step 5: Straighten out your chain and join with a slip stitch to the 16th stitch with the bead in it. (forming toe ring)
Step 6: ch1, turn, and begin to work back up the 12 chains worked in step 3.
Step 7: 1 sc in each next 3 stiches, 1hdc in each next 3 stitches, 1dc in each next 3 stitches, 1trcr in each next 3 stitches.
Step 8: Straighten out your chain and join to the beginning chain with a slip stitch. Fasten off and leave about a 2 inch tail to stitch back in.
You’re done with one now do the matching one. Don’t stop there. Crochet a matching necklace and braclet.
